West African Komei -- A Cultural Gathering and Sharing

Purpose:
"Komei" means "a cultural gathering or sharing. " Braima Moiwai offers students a first- hand view of Sierra Leone and other West African countries. As students handle African fabrics, musical instruments and wood carvings, they learn to utilize resources in their own environment. African dance and games enhance this excursion to Sierra Leone, making it a true "nhtoye," an opportunity to understand another culture.

   
Sample format:
Day 1- Sierra Leone and other parts of Africa: slides, photos and videos
Day 2 - African artifacts, instruments, wood carvings, textiles: hands- on display
Day 3 - African games: "I have a dog," "kpawo," and "akara"
Day 4 - Welcoming, circle and village challenge dances
Day 5 - Conclusion

Special needs: hearing impaired
