Braima Moiwai - West African Artist and Storyteller

African Cultural Journey

Purpose:
Join West African artist Braima Moiwai and African American artist Fahali Igbo (aka Robert E. Johnson), as they share the arts and stories that bond African Americans with West Africa. The artists delight your students with hands- on drumming techniques, games, folktales, dance and the influences of african languages (over 4,000 words!) on American English,while relating their boyhood experiences growing up in their respective communities.

Sample format:
Day 1- muscial instruments and artifacts
Day 2- African American/African games: soul train, Akara, Duck Duck Goose
Day 3- hands-on drumming technique
Day 4- interactive folktales
Day 5- dance and music: Circle Dance, the African Word Game

Recommended grade level: K- 12
Special needs: BEH, AG, LD
