African Games and Storytelling - "Mek we talk ehn play"

Purpose:
Join Braima Moiwai for games, stories and songs from Mende-land. The Mendes are the largest of fifteen ethnic groups of Sierra Leone, West Africa. In a traditional Mende village, children entertain themselves by playing games, singing songs and listening to stories told by elders. Residency crosses the Atlantic ocean by connecting the traditions of West Africa with the South Carolina sea island culture. "Mek wi talk ehn play" will transport your students into the daily life of a rural farming village, swhere community is the best teacher.

 

Sample format:
Day 1 - Introduction: The Mende people and their language.
Day 2 - Akara, a lively circle game. "I Have a Dog," a challenge game
Day 3 - Call and response: vocal sounds and African instruments
Day 4 - Mende stories. a "woo lo Nyama" (standing still with the leader game)
